The history of home automation
In essence, the history of home automation is as follows. During the 1950s, NASA brought the first automatic timer to the home in the form of the Kilner thermostat, that set the room temperature at night and the temperature during the day, after the residents had gone to bed. This device, which had the same form as today’s modern programmable thermostats, had to withstand the trials of homes that had larger thermostats, some of which were over 30cm long. This thermostat was integrated with a television set that received the command from the remote control in the bedroom, and these shows played during the night.
Home automation in the 1990s
In the 1990s, an electronic security company that developed the first commercial smart key for a mobile phone, the AMID, faced significant opposition from the mobile phone industry. Initially, AMID was forced to make a key with its own circuit boards to eliminate any possibility of a key being opened with the cellular phone itself. When the handset industry later began to develop its own key, the AMID was not able to sell the electric key in volume because of lack of carriers. Although it later re-invented the electronic key (that we know as smart lock) that included embedded circuits, it was still never able to launch such a product.
